How to Get a Portuguese NIF (Tax Number)
A NIF is Portugal's tax identification number, required for banking, leases, utilities, and tax filing, and it is usually the first step before applying for IFICI. We obtain yours remotely in 48 hours.
A NIF, Número de Identificação Fiscal, is Portugal's tax identification number, required for nearly everything from opening a bank account to signing a lease, and it's usually the first step before applying for IFICI.
The number Portugal uses to recognise you
The NIF is issued by Finanças, the Portuguese tax authority, and it is permanent. It does not expire, it does not make you a tax resident, and it does not create a tax liability by itself. What it does is unlock the practical side of living here.

Documents typically needed
Requirements vary slightly by nationality and by the office handling the request. We confirm the exact list for your case before starting.
We obtain your NIF remotely in 48 hours, before you move.
We act as your fiscal representative, file the request with Finanças, and send you the number. From there the sequence is straightforward: bank account, address, then your IFICI application in the same year you become resident.

The NIF is the start, not the plan
Holding a NIF changes nothing about how you are taxed. That is decided by whether you become a Portuguese tax resident, and then by whether a regime such as IFICI applies to your activity. If you are moving with income from work, a company, or investments, the order matters: get the number early, then get the regime right in your first year of residency.

No Portuguese bank will open an account for you without a NIF, and most digital banks operating in Portugal ask for it too.
Rental agreements, property purchases, and most service contracts require the NIF of every party named on them.
Your NIF is the number your entire tax record sits under, including any IFICI application and your annual IRS return.
Electricity, water, internet, mobile contracts, health registration, and even receipts at the till are tied to the number.
A non resident appoints a fiscal representative with a Portuguese address, who requests the NIF at Finanças on their behalf. This is the normal route for anyone still living abroad, and it is how most people arrive in Portugal already holding a number. The representative stays on record until you register a Portuguese address of your own.
This is the route we handle for clients.
You attend a Finanças office or a Loja de Cidadão, present your identification and proof of address, and receive the number the same day. It works well if you are already in Portugal with a local address, and less well if you need the number to arrange the housing and banking in the first place.
No fiscal representative needed once you hold a Portuguese address.
Can I get a NIF before moving to Portugal?
Yes. A non resident can obtain a NIF from abroad by appointing a fiscal representative with a Portuguese address, who submits the request to Finanças on their behalf. This is the standard approach, and it is usually the sensible one, because banking, leases, and an IFICI application all sit behind the number. You do not need to set foot in Portugal to get one.
Almost everything with a financial or contractual dimension. Opening a bank account, signing a lease or buying property, connecting utilities, taking out a mobile contract, registering with the health service, filing an IRS return, and applying for a tax regime such as IFICI. Practically, it is the first identifier Portugal has for you.
Through us, 48 hours from the point we have your documents, handled remotely before you move. Applying in person in Portugal is typically same day at a Finanças office or Loja de Cidadão, subject to appointment availability, which can be the harder part.
No, and this is a common confusion. A NIF is an identification number and thousands of non residents hold one without owing Portuguese tax on worldwide income. Tax residency is a separate status with its own tests, and it is that status, not the number, that IFICI depends on.
Do I need a fiscal representative permanently?
Only while you are a non resident. Once you become resident and register a Portuguese address with Finanças, the representative can be removed from your record.
