What is SIFIDE and how does it connect to IFICI?

SIFIDE is Portugal's tax incentive system for business R&D spending. IFICI's R&D route covers personnel whose costs are certified as eligible under SIFIDE, connecting a company-level R&D incentive to a personal tax incentive for the people doing the work.

Does my employer need SIFIDE certification already in place?

Yes. Eligibility depends on your role's costs being formally certified as SIFIDE-eligible. This is assessed at the company level.

What if my employer has applied for SIFIDE but has no decision yet?

This is the most common timing problem on this route. The IFICI application still goes to ANI by 15 January, and the assessment of the activity requirements rests on the R&D cost eligibility, so a pending or incomplete company position weakens the file. In practice the company side should be prepared during the residency year rather than in January.

Does the whole company need to be an R&D company?

No. What matters is that your role's costs fall inside the research and development expenses that are eligible under SIFIDE, which is assessed on the project and the cost base rather than on the company's overall character. A manufacturer with one certified R&D project can support this route for the people working on it.

The formal EQF Level 8, or Level 6 plus three years of experience, requirement belongs to the highly qualified professions route rather than this one. On the R&D route the application still asks for proof of your academic qualifications, and they are expected to be consistent with the research role you hold.

ANI (Agência Nacional de Inovação) is the regulating entity for the R&D route.
