Five dates that decide your first year
The IFICI calendar is fixed. If you became a Portuguese tax resident in a given year, everything below happens in the first quarter of the following year.
IFICI is defined under Article 58-A of Portugal's Tax Benefits Statute and implemented through Portaria n.º 352/2024/1, which sets these dates. The regime applies to people who became Portuguese tax residents from 1 January 2024 onward. For the 2024 income year only, a transitional rule moved the application deadline to 15 March 2025 and the Tax Authority's status information to 30 April 2025. Those transitional dates have passed, so the standard calendar above is the one that applies now.
Which entity handles your route
Article 2 of Portaria n.º 352/2024/1 gives each of the six routes one competent entity. Filing with the wrong one is one of the most common ways a first year is lost, because there is no time to refile before 15 January.
How we help you qualify and apply
Where applications go wrong
Almost every failed application fails for one of four reasons: the qualifying role was not in place during the residency year, the file went to the wrong competent entity, the employer missed its own 15 March confirmation in the Portal das Finanças, or the documents arrived after 15 January. None of those are fixable in January, which is why the work belongs in the year before. You also have to keep the evidence afterwards: the Tax Authority can ask you to produce proof of the activity and the income in any of the ten years, under Article 128 of the IRS Code.

You submit your IFICI application to the competent entity for your route, covering the year in which you became a Portuguese tax resident.
Competent entity validates and communicates to AT
The competent entity assesses whether your activity fits the route it regulates, then communicates your application and its assessment of the activity requirements to the Tax Authority by electronic data transmission.
Tax Authority releases elements for employer confirmation
On the highly qualified professions route, the Tax Authority makes the elements to be confirmed available in the employer's reserved area of the Portal das Finanças by the end of February.
Employer confirms in the Portal das Finanças
The company where the activity is carried out confirms, in its reserved area, that you meet the requirements of the route and that you exercise the highly qualified profession claimed.
Your IFICI registration status becomes available from the Tax Authority, applying retroactively to the full tax year in which you became resident.

What happens if I miss the 15 January deadline?
You lose the first year. The deadline is set in the legislation and is not routinely extended, so a late application means that tax year is taxed under the standard progressive rates. Whether you can still claim IFICI for the remaining years of the 10 year period depends on your circumstances and is worth reviewing with a tax adviser before you assume either outcome. The practical rule is to start the process well before December, because the qualifying role and the tax residency registration both need to be in place before you file.
Roughly two and a half months from filing. The competent entity has until 15 February to validate your case and communicate it to the Tax Authority, and your registration status is normally available by 31 March. Until then you have no formal confirmation, which is why we file early rather than in the final week.
No. You apply once, and the status runs for 10 consecutive years from the year you became a Portuguese tax resident. What you do each year is declare your income correctly in your annual IRS return, and keep meeting the conditions of the route you qualified under. If the qualifying activity ends, the treatment for that year can be affected even though the status itself is not reapplied for.
It depends on your route, and Article 2 of Portaria n.º 352/2024/1 names one entity per route. FCT takes higher education teaching and scientific research, including roles at technology and innovation centres recognised under Decree-Law No. 126-B/2021. AICEP takes qualified roles under contractual investment benefits. The Tax Authority takes the highly qualified professions route, whether the company benefits from investment incentives or exports at least 50% of turnover. AICEP or IAPMEI take roles at entities recognised as relevant to the national economy. ANI takes R&D personnel whose costs are eligible under SIFIDE. Startup Portugal takes roles at startups certified under Law 21/2023. Filing with the wrong entity costs time you may not have before 15 January.
What if I change employer or my route changes?
You file a new application. Article 2 of Portaria n.º 352/2024/1 requires a fresh application whenever the competent entity changes, or the company that has to confirm the requirements changes. Separately, if you stop meeting the conditions of your route, or any registered detail changes, you must inform the competent entity by 15 January of the year after the change.
Which documents does the application itself require?
Portaria n.º 352/2024/1 lists a copy of the employment contract where the activity is a job position, an up to date commercial certificate where the activity is a board seat, a copy of the grant contract where the activity is scientific research, proof of the applicable academic qualifications, and any further documents the competent entity requests. The company must also give you a declaration attesting that the activity requirements are met.
The application relates to the year you became a Portuguese tax resident, so it is filed after that year, in the window ending 15 January. The preparation, meaning your NIF, your residency registration, your qualifying role, and your supporting documents, should all be done during the year itself.
