IFICI for American Expats

IFICI for American expats is a Portuguese tax incentive that applies a 20% flat rate to qualifying Portuguese income for up to 10 years, entirely separate from the US obligation to file taxes on worldwide income.

IFICI for American expats works the same as it does for any other qualifying professional on the Portuguese side, a 20% flat rate on Portuguese income for up to 10 years, but US citizens carry a separate, unrelated obligation to file US taxes on worldwide income no matter where they live.

Read the full IFICI guide

This page covers how IFICI works on the Portuguese side only. US citizens and green card holders remain obligated to file US taxes on worldwide income regardless of Portuguese tax residency or IFICI status. We strongly recommend coordinating with a US qualified tax advisor alongside our Portuguese side guidance.

Your passport does not change your IFICI assessment

IFICI asks what you do in Portugal, not where you are from. Americans are assessed against the same six routes as everyone else, and against the same conditions: genuine Portuguese tax residency, a qualifying remunerated activity, no Portuguese tax residency in the previous 5 years, and no prior benefit from NHR or Programa Regressar.

Portugal taxes where you live. The US taxes citizenship.

These are two independent systems, and IFICI changes only one of them. Nothing about Portuguese tax residency or an approved IFICI status removes a US filing obligation, and no Portuguese adviser, including us, can resolve the US side for you.

FBAR and FATCA are US reporting requirements that may apply to you. We name them so you know to raise them with your US advisor. We do not interpret them, and nothing on this page should be read as US tax advice.

What IFICI changes in Portugal

How different income types are taxed under the standard Portuguese regime versus IFICI.

Run both advisors in parallel, from the start

The Americans who have the smoothest move are the ones who set up both sides at once: a Portuguese team securing the qualifying activity and the IFICI filing, and a US qualified advisor handling the federal and state picture with accurate Portuguese facts in hand.

We are happy to speak directly with your US accountant, share your residency dates and IFICI status, and answer their questions about Portuguese treatment. If you do not have one yet, get one in place before your first Portuguese tax year closes.

A qualifying role at an eligible Portuguese company, with the qualification level and activity confirmed by the employer.

A genuine, remunerated management or board role at a startup certified under Portugal's startup law.

Higher education teaching or research at an institution recognised within Portugal's science and technology system.

R&D staff whose costs qualify under the SIFIDE tax credit system, typically inside a company running a certified project.

Roles at companies with recognised investment projects, or with a qualifying share of turnover from exports.

Roles at entities recognised as relevant to the national economy by AICEP or IAPMEI.

Your IFICI route, the qualifying activity, your NIF and tax residency registration, the filing with the competent entity by 15 January, and your Portuguese annual return. Nationality plays no part in this assessment.

Your annual US federal return, the reporting requirements that exist for Americans abroad, including FBAR and FATCA, and any state level obligations. We do not advise on US tax positions, elections, or strategy.

Does IFICI reduce or eliminate my US tax filing obligation?

No. IFICI is a Portuguese tax incentive only. US citizens and green card holders must still file US taxes on worldwide income regardless of Portuguese tax status.

Does being American affect my IFICI eligibility?

No, the same six eligibility routes apply to Americans as to any other nationality.

Do I need a visa to move to Portugal as a US citizen?

Yes. US citizens are non EU nationals and need a visa or residence permit to live in Portugal. That is a separate question from IFICI, which is a tax regime and not a residency permit. Our team walks you through both tracks so the timing lines up.

They are US reporting requirements that can apply to Americans holding accounts and assets outside the United States. They exist independently of Portuguese tax law and are unaffected by IFICI. We flag that they exist so they are on your radar, and your US qualified advisor is the right person to explain how they apply to you.

Can you work together with my US accountant?

Yes, and that is how we prefer to work. We keep your US advisor informed of your Portuguese residency dates, your IFICI status, and how your income is treated in Portugal, so their work rests on accurate facts rather than assumptions.
