Tax League World Cup, Matchday 3: Qatar Has 0% Income Tax. Switzerland Has a Wealth Tax. Guess Who Won Off the Pitch.
The Tax League World Cup runs daily during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Every match gets a tax comparison. Same rules as always: €500K salary benchmark, best available regime, no cherry picking.
Day 3 delivered chaos on the pitch. Off the pitch? Even better.
June 13, 2026. Four matches. Qatar held Switzerland to a last-minute equaliser. Scotland won their first World Cup match in 36 years. Australia stunned Türkiye. Brazil and Morocco couldn't separate themselves.
On the pitch, the results were dramatic. Off the pitch, they were brutal.
Here's the full breakdown.
Match 1: Switzerland 1 to 1 Qatar
On the pitch: Switzerland dominated for 90 minutes. Created chance after chance. Then Qatar's Khoukhi headed in a last minute equaliser to steal a point. Daylight robbery at the San Francisco Bay Area stadium.
Off the pitch:
🇨🇭 Switzerland: Combined marginal income tax rates range roughly from the low 30s to just over 40% depending on canton and municipality. No expat flat tax regime available to working executives. The famous lump sum applies only to people who don't work in Switzerland. Wealth tax on top at typically 0.1% to 0.8% of net assets. Take home on a €500K salary: around €375K in Zug (best case) / around €280K in Zurich.
🇶🇦 Qatar: 0% personal income tax. Not a typo. Zero tax on employment income, investment income, or any other personal income for both Qatari nationals and expats. No VAT. No wealth tax. Expat social security contributions: also zero. Take home on a €500K salary: around €500K.
Tax winner: 🇶🇦 Qatar. By up to €125K per year in Zug. By over €220K per year if you were unlucky enough to pick Zurich.
Switzerland dominated the match and got robbed by a last minute goal. Off the pitch, Qatar didn't even need extra time. 0% beats 30 to 40%+ every single time. No exceptions.
Match 2: Brazil 1 to 1 Morocco
On the pitch: The marquee match of Day 3. Brazil and Morocco traded blows in an enthralling 1 to 1. Neither side could find a winner despite both teams creating genuine chances. Brazil will be disappointed. They're expected to top this group.
Off the pitch:
🇧🇷 Brazil: 27.5% top rate, applied from relatively low income thresholds, around BRL 4,600 to 5,000 per month (around BRL 55K to 60K per year). Progressive worldwide taxation for residents. No dedicated expat flat tax regime. Take home on a €500K salary: around €365K.
🇲🇦 Morocco: 37% top rate. Progressive system running from 0% to 37%. No dedicated expat regime for inbound talent. Standard rates apply to everyone. Take home on a €500K salary: around €315K.
Tax winner: 🇧🇷 Brazil. By around €50K per year.
A draw on the pitch. A clear winner off it. Morocco's Atlas Lions are incredible on grass. Less competitive on tax rates.
Match 3: Scotland 1 to 0 Haiti
On the pitch: Scotland's first World Cup win since 1990. Thirty six years. McGinn scored in the 28th minute and Scotland held on for a historic victory. The tartan army went absolutely wild in Boston.
Off the pitch:
🏴 Scotland: Scotland has its own devolved income tax rates on employment income, with a top rate of around 48% above £125K, higher than the rest of the UK. The UK's legacy non dom regime is being replaced from April 2025 by a four year FIG regime for new arrivals, which provides foreign income and gains relief for a limited period while UK source income remains taxed at standard rates throughout. No flat rate equivalent to IFICI. Take home on a €500K salary: around €275K.
🇭🇹 Haiti: 30% top rate. Progressive system. No dedicated expat regime. One of the lower top rates in the Caribbean. Take home on a €500K salary: around €350K.
Tax winner: 🇭🇹 Haiti. By around €75K per year.
Scotland waited 36 years for a World Cup win. They finally got it on the pitch. Off the pitch, the country that lost still wins. Haiti takes the tax trophy. Scotland can't catch a break.
Match 4: Australia 2 to 0 Türkiye
On the pitch: The upset of Day 3. Australia were tactically brilliant. Irankunda scored with a stunning first touch and finish in the 27th minute. Metcalfe doubled the lead in the 75th. Türkiye had no answer. The Socceroos stun the group.
Off the pitch:
🇦🇺 Australia: 45% top rate plus a 2% Medicare levy, giving a combined 47% on the highest incomes. No dedicated expat flat tax regime. Worldwide taxation for residents. Take home on a €500K salary: around €265K.
🇹🇷 Türkiye: 40% top rate. Progressive system. No dedicated expat regime for inbound talent. Take home on a €500K salary: around €300K.
Tax winner: 🇹🇷 Türkiye. By around €35K per year.
Australia wins on the pitch. Türkiye wins off it. Small consolation for a team that just got beaten 2 to 0 at the World Cup, but a win is a win.

The Day 3 headline
Qatar has 0% income tax. No personal tax on anything, for anyone, ever. Switzerland has combined rates of 30 to 40%+, a wealth tax, and one of the highest costs of living in the world.
On the pitch, Qatar grabbed a last minute point. Off the pitch, it wasn't a draw. It was a massacre.
And Scotland, who waited 36 years for a World Cup win, still can't win off the pitch. At around 48% top rate with a four year FIG regime that only covers foreign income, Scotland's tax picture is genuinely grim.
What's coming on Day 4
Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Ivory Coast, Ecuador, Japan, Tunisia and Curaçao all play on June 14.
Ivory Coast has the highest personal income tax rate in the world at 60%. Japan hits 55.95% combined. And Sweden, who we've already covered in the European Tax League, need to prove themselves on the pitch too.
The off the pitch results on Day 4 are going to be brutal.
